Beach Half Marathon, 10 & 5KM
23rd August 2015

UPDATE: View quick highlights of this years event on the YouTube link below. Check back soon for details of how to enter next year.

The Silloth Beach Half marathon is a new and unique event. The gruelling course extends from the town centre to beyond Allonby and back again. We have ample first aid, water stations and first responders. The run is well marshalled  and includes travelling marshalls on quad bikes operating on the beach. The run takes place in August and starts and finishes in the town centre on Silloth Green. The start time is determined by the tide. The main street is closed while the runners make their way to the west beach and then run on the beach towards Allonby and back. The local school allows runners to user their changing rooms and showers. Entrants register online using the Queue Buster system and we use a professional timing system. Runners are welcomed back with a medal, trophies and the best bit, according to the runners, is the free bag of chips from Alison who runs Silloth’s excellent local chippie.

Marie is the Silloth Postie. She’s a well-known and popular character around Silloth. An ex-soldier, she’s tough, fit and resilient. She can often be seen running in Silloth, keeping fit and, more recently, in training for the new Silloth Beach Half Marathon. She led the way home for the locals in the event.

Marie acknowledges how tough the Silloth Beach Half Marathon is, “Its a really tough run as the terrain really saps your energy. The organisation of the run was brilliant. We were really well looked after and everyone was made welcome. Marshalling was great and all we needed was on hand. The free chips at the end were brilliant! Word is getting around in the running community about this event and I think it will really take off”

The event was staged for the first time in 2013 and there are consistent themes emerging from the event. It’s a tough race, not for the faint hearted and presents a serious challenge to serious runners. It is not a fun run. However we are planning some family events in Silloth to run alongside the main event. Watch this space.

Looking for some pre Great North Run races on Google last week I stumbled across the Silloth on Solway beach half marathon and thought – I’ll give it a go, Silloth isn’t that far away from Tyneside...

Would I do it again knowing the challenge that lay ahead? Definitely! Pushing yourself to your limits and achieving things you never thought possible is a good enough reason to put myself through the pain again!
